Due to short staffing, I was asked to take on a boys class. This was daunting because I had little to no men’s gymnastics experience. I asked my coworker who not only did men’s gymnastics for over a decade but also coached boys too. He coaches the older boys so I was able to ask him what I should have the younger boys focus on to make them as successful as possible. At the end of the session (8 weeks of this class) my boss asked me if I would take on another boys class because parents had expressed how grateful they were for a female coach who was invested in the kids and formed a close relationship with the boys that was not seen with their previous male coach. I learned to step out of my comfort zone of women’s gymnastics and coaching girls. It got me comfortable with working with a new group of kids. After upwards of 10 years, I was able to learn a new side of gymnastics and applied some boys' aspects to the girl’s lesson plans.
